North Carolina, a ton of pride in this state and for good reason.
I didn't have the same experience living there. In fact, almost everyone I know has left the state. Out of all the Southern states, I would say NC residents have shown the least amount of pride for their state.

Can you give reasons why they left? Just curious to hear. Were they originally from NC or unsatisfied transplants?

As a North Carolinian; I'd say it's a unique mix of pride for the state while also annoyance with how everyone else thinks it's the best state too. Naive Northerners and Floridians who think NC is the land of milk and honey and move here in droves expecting it to be something it's not and trying to change it into something else make it a somewhat less "brag-worthy" state.
I love NC; especially traditional NC....but I am not a fan of all of the "NC hype" that's going on now.

I'd agree with this. Sometimes I wonder why the Northerners and Floridians don't pick South Carolina or Virginia! Although I'm pretty positive Virginia is just as transplant saturated as North Carolina, but I don't think it's growing as fast.
I will give an honorable mention to the state of New Mexico. I was personally surprised by the number of people I had met that had the Zia symbol tattooed somewhere on their body. They will also defend their green chili and New Mexican cuisine as being the end all be all.
