When I lived in New York City, there were several fast food establishments that had walk up windows, where you could walk up, order your food, and then walk out with your order (the McDonald's on 125th and Broadway, for example). I thought it was a bit neat, especially since you can't walk through a drive thru in most cities.

Are there any other large cities or college towns in North America that replicate this experience? I know this isn't a groundbreaking question to ask, but I'm just asking out of sheer curiosity. Do any of the other major North American cities have these types of establishments? And just to limit the criteria a bit, I'm talking ONLY chain fast food, and NOT a local diner/establishment (a la Geno's in Philly, for example). Maybe Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles have these windows? Since we love to talk about density and walkability on these forums, maybe this is the ultimate indicator?

Several places in Los Angeles.

Some Good Times restaurants in the Denver area. And a Taco Star that used to be a Good Times in Thornton, CO.

Dick's in Spokane, WA.

Interesting, I've never really seen these. I'd imagine cities with warm weather all year round. So maybe the Southwest?

There are seasonal examples in the north like A&W and Dairy Queen that aren't even restricted to large metros. The Dairy Queen in my hometown was walk-up only, and was closed about half the year.

Yeah Dairy Queen in Montreal is like this.

Also, I think Checkers in Milwaukee had walk-up windows back in the day, not sure if they still do it.

Here's one in Manhattan.

Don't need to have the dining room open when only the walk through window is open, saves costs at less busy times.

They've opened a number of walk-up Starbucks in a lot of places, including one just a few blocks from my apartment in Chicago about a year and a half ago.

Not sure about drive up places with a walk up as well since I never drive anywhere, but there are certainly places here with windows/storefronts where you just walk up and grab food, slices of pizza, etc. without having to go indoors.

This phillys best pizza place down from my condo has a walk up

^ This is about large chains, though. Almost every town has local walk-ups.

I think there are some examples in dense large metro areas, and the rest generally are in the north at seasonal businesses (A seasonal Dairy Queen stand, for example).
