Link: The 10 Most ‘Artsy’ States in America – Growth Financial

10. Connecticut
09. Washington (state)
08. Maine
07. District of Columbia
06. New Mexico
05. Rhode Island
04. Oregon
03. California
02. Vermont
01. New York

Attached is a relatively recent article that has determined the most 'arsty' states in America by determining the percentage of people 25 and over with visual and performing art degrees. Though their method to determine such a method of criteria is indeed questionable, I was wondering how the rest of the City-Data faithful feel about this arbitrary list. Do you agree or disagree? Were their other states that should have been included based on personal opinion and experience? I'm curious to know what you think as to which states qualify as being the most "artsy" in America.

Pretty sure that most of the world's best artists and performers don't have degrees in the visual or performing arts.

Or at least "many." This study measures something (which may be interesting I suppose), but not what it purports.

How do I get paid for coming up with ridiculous lists like this?

you first need to apply for and secure a gov't grant, then you compile your list

No, but where the visual arts are concerned curators do. And where art is made and displayed you have curators working in museums, galleries, etc.

Also, fields like film and television production and computer graphics and animation, degrees are useful although a good portfolio can be all you need if you have connections. But that is a big reason people go to school for those degrees, those connections.

As far as peforming arts, dance and theater degrees are more common for people working in some of those fields. I have a friend who graduated with a degree in Cello performance (a step above basket weaving?) from Berklee College which he believes gets people to even listen to his performance demos which is how he gets booked.

Truthfully I could see Colorado somewhere in the 11-20 range. Not as artsy as say it's neighbor to the south, but certainly above average.
