NH and Vermont
RI and Connecticut
Maryland and Delaware
all seem like candidates to be merged.

Washington and Oregon
Kansas and Nebraska
Arizona and New Mexico
Mississippi and Alabama
among others also seem like candidates for mergers.

Of course no two states will ever actually merge for all sorts of logistical reasons and the fact that they would have their influence diluted in the US Senate and the electoral college.

Ain't gonna happen; in nearly 240 years, state boundaries, once established, have changed only once (creation of West Virginia from Virginia), and it took a Civil War to do that.

Merging the Carolinas wouldn't be the best idea. SC'ers look down on us because they think we're so liberal and less southern, clogged with Yankee transplants in the major metros. NC'ers look down on South Carolina because they think SC is so backwards, hick, and unprogressive. The rivalry between the two could be stronger, but we're not in love with SC and vice versa.

My, my, my. I have homes in both states and let me tell you one is no better than the other. Apart from the larger cities, NC is no different than any other place in the south. Get over yourself and superiority of NC over the "deep south." Ain't so.
BTW, SC has a lot of "yankee" transplants also. Been to Charleston or Greenville lately?

Also, liberal and Less southern is not necessarily a good thing.

NC'ers look down on South Carolina because they think SC is so backwards, hick, and unprogressive.
Really huh? maybe you should look around NC.

Those are only assumptions! Did I say they're necessarily true? I'm not denying the fact that there is a little bit of a rivalry between both states because it's the truth. I have a friend from Greenville who told me South Carolinians think of NC as so much more liberal and transplant saturated. She even told me, being from Raleigh, that "I think I'm from the South, but I'm not." On the flip side, I had a high school history teacher from NC who HATED SC, always poked fun at their history and historical figures like Strom Thurmond and John C. Calhoun. First day of school, she asked if anyone was from SC because she was going to pick on that state throughout the semester. Most people don't care, at least around Raleigh where I'm from. We were much closer to Virginia, anyway. Also, South Carolina is in the SEC while UNC is ACC so you don't have those two playing very often. However, there IS a slight rivalry between the two states. Maybe I exaggerated in the first post, but it's true. It could be more heated, though.

Your friend from Greenville is one person with an opinion. Most people from SC do not consider people from anywhere in NC not to be southern, because they know damn well that they are. And to think differently is ignorance. As far as your teacher is concerned, I am sure that some ignorant people in SC feels the same about NC. I know people that poke fun of NC. Jesse Helms ring a bell?

Of course he rings a bell. He's our version of Strom Thurmond! It's not like our history is perfect compared to SC. The Wilmington Race Riot is a perfect example, along with the fact that NC had more KKK activity than the rest of the South combined during the Civil Rights Movement. Again, I don't look down on SC at all. However, you do have your NC folks who think we're perfect and so much more progressive than SC. You'll probably have your Virginia folks who look down on NC, as well!

Of course, and you are right. There are ignorant people in all states. Just like the people from SC that look down on NC. Ignorance will never end.
