My hubby and I are both in our early 60's and want to retire South from NY state. Both of us will have State government pensions and social security. After reviewing web sites we are more confused than ever and everything is starting to sound the same. Anyway my question is: Which state is best for retirement tax wise; South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida? We want to buy a small house for cash, not work and have fun. Thanks.

I would worry less about the state aspect and focus in on varying cities. All three will be about the same in terms of overall cost, with Florida better off in terms of taxes but higher in everyday expenses such as food or gas, not to mention homeowners/car insurance. The Savannah area would be a great option in my opinion as it has the milder weather, plenty to do, access to lots of services including quality healthcare and a fairly low cost of living overall. It's also in a very low risk area for hurricanes which is something to consider.
