It's definitely Fayetteville in NC, very few people defend that city. Even natives hate it, and I personally know a few. Most end up moving to Raleigh, really. Anyway, the crime is awful and there's just nothing to do in that city. The only positive aspect is that it isn't terribly far from Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, and that's about it.
People in Raleigh love picking on Durham the way NY picks on NJ. They think it's like Camden, NJ or Compton, CA which is hilarious. It has rougher areas, but so does Raleigh! Don't know if the rest of the state feels the same way, but Wake County just can't enough when it comes to picking on Durham. Maybe because Raleigh thinks it's so cultured, snobby, and glitzy (North Hills, downtown). Durham is more gritty and rough around the edges, with the tobacco culture and whatnot.
Rocky Mount is another one, at least people in the Triangle and eastern NC pick on it. Awful town, you really can't check WRAL without hearing about another shooting or robbery in Rocky Mount.
We have a couple- Brockton and Lawrence (Massachusetts) Both are former manufacturing hubs that have seen most of their jobs move away and now are hotspots for drugs and crime. Of course, rents are low in both places, so they attract lots of poor people and immigrants trying to move ahead in a very tough environment.
This is misguided. Gary is mostly African American - it's no secret they usually lean democrat.

I always hear Terre Haute getting talked about somewhat negatively, I don't think it's serious but I do hear it. I never actually spent time in T.H. but I have friends from there that don't seem to mind it.
Anderson and Muncie get bashed quite a bit and it's unfortunate because it's based on the two towns decline after the factories left town and left the cities pretty poor. I don't think Muncie is that bad and I've spent quite a bit of time there, granted it was on or near the Ball State campus.
Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago probably get the brunt of the negativity for the same reasons Anderson and Muncie get it, but on a much larger scale. It isn't just the areas being poor, they also get it for being rated as dangerous because of crime rates.
