It's just the Northeast. We are part of both the North and the East Coast but the East Coast itself obviously stretches all the way down to Florida.

TBH it kind of bothers me when people think the East Coast and the Northeast are synonymous, and forget that the Southeast is also part of the East Coast. The "West Coast" means the whole coast, why would it be different for the East?

I have often wondered the same thing. The East coast extends from Maine to Florida.

So you are saying the states above New Jersey are not on the East coast? That makes no sense, since you have coastal states from Maine to New Jersey.

I'm from Boston, and I'd call Boston an East Coast city.

Are you really from the "northeast" though? I thought that whole area in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania is really just "Mid-Atlantic". I suppose it's a subset of the northeast, but isn't New England and New York the real northeasterners?

Many use 'East coast' to refer to the Northeast although obviously the South shares the eastern coast of the country. It seems to me that When someone in the West says 'East coast' they are rarely referrring to the southern coastal U.S. but rather to New England or Midatlantic states.

And New Jersey is certainly the Northeast.
