Hi all, looking to make the move down south. Trying to find the perfect place. Here is our criteria:
-Weather: We want somewhere we can spend 9-10 months of the year outside comfortably.
-Jobs: A decent amount of IT and nursing jobs.
-Size: Preferably a medium to smaller city. (For reference, Lansing and Grand Rapids MI sized) Ideally we'd like to live somewhere we can make the commute to the country in 45 minutes or less. Eventually the goal is to have a family in a small town, own some land, and commute to work to the city.
Check out the Florida panhandle. Pensacola for a big-ish city (Navy base, civilian IT), or Okaloosa County (Ft. Walton Beach, Eglin AFB, lots of civil service/contractor opportunities). Opportunities all throughout for nursing.
I just visited Knoxville, TN a couple weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting it to be similar to Memphis or Nashville but it reminded me more of other college towns like Austin or Madison.
I did not feel at all like I was in Tennessee while when you go to Memphis, you definitely feel like you are in a Southern town.

Where do you guys think fits us?!
Take a look at Carrollton, Ga. About 50 miles west of Atlanta. Large new company just opened here, does something with healthcare, doctor reports, etc. EHR, RCM and Practice Management Solutions - Greenway
Large expanding hospital.. University of West Georgia.
You won't find "a perfect place", but you won't find a bad one, either. Any city of that size size will be diverse and metropolitan enough that you will be able to accommodate yourself to it. Or hate it. It depends on you, not the city.
I would say Lafayette, LA. It has a good medical sector and a growing IT field. Check out the Louisiana Forum for more on that. It lies about 45 min to an hour away(depending on traffic across the swamp) from Baton Rouge a bigger city and New Orleans is 2 hours away for an even bigger city and more fun. The country isn't far away at all as well. Lafayette maintains a smaller feel to it when it is actually a decent size. Furthermore its a college town big on sports and culture and has lots of festivals and such. The college is also known for its Computer Science which I assume 3 tech companies are moving offices here. IBM is coming to Baton Rouge as well. Its a pretty happening place in southern Louisiana.

Repping my city here
1000 tech jobs locating here and one of the fastest fiber networks in the world (gigabit)
Also a foodie paradise and plenty of shopping options while still maintaining that cajun charm.
Also NOLA is just 1 hour 45 minutes drive.
Second vote for the Huntsville, Alabama area. Mid to small sized city renowned for it's technology sector. Northern Alabama is beautiful, with plenty of mountains, ridges and valleys, rivers and lakes. Would be a great place to own some land as well. My wife and I have looked at purchasing property on Guntersville Lake just south of there.
