Second in what? Certainly not population.

I know that the fire was mainly south and somewhat west of the Chicago River. but it did cross over because the river caught fire.

So thePR, what you're saying is that St. Louis was Chicago's main rival. Due to Chicago being more of a logistics hub (ie rail, canal, lake), and the ability to redesign (modernise) the city after the fire, Chicago came out on top. Cool, thanks!

I would say yes. Glad I could answer that.

if you are just asking rival, most people in Chicago would say STL, MIL or Detroit....mostly being Detroit. I am not comparing statistics or anything like that, just which city they hate/ consider a rival.....it will be Detroit more often than not. Maybe they could have competed in other areas 50 years ago when Detroit was booming.... but not now. I am in no way comparing their trade, institutions, economics, or size( although Detroit Metro is 2nd in midwest to Chicagoland I believe), just what people in the street would say....

Okay, in response to this ancient thread

Chi-Town's rivals have changed over the years....

1800: some other muddy swamp
1850: Springfield, IL
1900: St Louis
1950: Detroit (yes, they were both manufacturing powerhouses at this time...)
2000: New York City

2050: ..... Dubai, UAE ???????

I like to say Minneapolis is Chicago's little brother (or sister)

Nah. Milwaukee is likely the little brother (sister).

Hrrm... I'd say NYC dominates the East, Chicago the Midwest, and LA the west...
The southeast is kind of up for grabs with Dallas, Houston, ATL, Miami

do any of them actually have rivals as standalone cohesive cities? I think they are all competing on a global level at this point and not so much with themselves. I.e. London/Paris/Madrid/Tokyo/Beijing/Berlin/Seoul/Hong Kong/Singapore/Moscow/Sao Paulo...
