Someplace where the majority of people are working class.
Poor people are in competition with each other just to get through life, which leads to bitterness.
The rich are often self-absorbed and detached from the rest of the world, which leads to arrogance and snobbery.
Middle-class Americans have this weird superiority complex going on, in which they like to pretend to be rich despite not being rich. Go to any suburban shopping mall and you'll find scores of men wearing boat shoes (with socks) despite the fact that they'll never be able to actually afford a boat. All the while many will snub the poor and call them lazy. This leads to bitterness, materialism, arrogance, and snobbery.
Arrogant, snobby, materialistic, unfriendliness is a result of urban (and hence suburban) civilization, and it exists to some extent in all states. If you want to get away from that, you must go live in a rural area at least 30 mi away from a large urban center, with no major corporate presence, no franchises, and people who pretty much make the same income range and drive similar vehicles. If you look hard enough, you can find some very well-educated small town folk who simply live in the country to get away from the rat race. You will find these even in states like New York and California if you look hard enough.
How odd to create a list for this purpose and not include states like Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, where the people are about as down to earth and friendly as you will find anywhere. Also wondering why he didn't include any states in the Southeast. Whenever I travel in the Southeast, the native Southerners are some of the nicest people I've ever met. They remind me a lot of the Midwesterners that I grew up around. Friendly, common (in a good way, meaning not putting on airs), down to earth, and willing to help out someone in need.
I vote the Upper Midwestern and the Southeastern states. They're not on his list, but oh, well.
