Hi CDcom - Grad student here. I've been trying to find a reliable data source for top-x employers for every US city (site specific). Ive tried Hoovers and the Census and I feel like there might something better. Any help would be super appreciated

A grad student trying to outsource his research project?

Try google? There are too many cities to get every city btw. Local government pages may help if you look them up.

I know Wikipedia has a lot of that type of data. When i was in grad school I used Wikipedia but IMPORTANT, always refer to its cited sources (most professors will reject wikis). I'm sure you will find a consistent data source after searching a few cities or states I know that local governments report that data somewhere.

You might have a hard time trying to find Top 10. But usually Wikipedia has the Top 3-5. There usually aren't more than a handful of big employers in each city.

You should also try the local paper websites. Usually, they will publish a top 5 or top 10 employers in the area. I'm sure you will see lots of hospitals and Wal-marts. Typically, those are in your top 5. Big manufacturers and industries use lots of contract or temp labor. Those positions do not count for the top 5 or 10 list since they are not employees.

Thank you City Data community! Wikipedia was the obvious choice but was looking for a single consistent source for this. Flyonpa's link was helpful. ReferenceUSA got me some answers as well. Suggesting to use Google is akin to asking to using the Internet ...

Cafrs also provide this info for anyone that's interested...
