I'm thinking if buying a place in Upstate NY or Southern New England. What town(s) would you recommend for someone who...

Is progressive and wants a progressive/liberal area
Wants an arts community (could be a small one, but it's there)
Wants a scenic area with lakes, nature trails, parks, close by
Has a car but would like to live in a walkable place where there are stores, coffeehouse, etc. nearby
Has public transit into NYC
Now that Northampton, MA has Amtrak service again, it fulfills every single requirement you list. It's a great little city. I went to college just outside of it (in Amherst, MA) and spent time there frequently. My mother also retired there, but due to health reasons, needs to move away after living there for nine years (which she deeply regrets).
When you say public transportation into NYC, would you include any form of transportation into NYC from anywhere in Upstate NY and New England?
