Most foreigners visit these places:

Arizona (Grand Canyon)
California
Florida
Nevada
New York

They tend to not know much about the flyover states in the Midwest or South.

No need to guess, I posted this here : http://www.city-data.com/forum/city-...here-does.html

While based on cities, you can get a clear picture on a state by state basis. Results in 1000s

1)New York, thanks to only New York city, 9,579
2)California, thanks to LA, Anaheim (Disneyland), San Francisco, and San Jose (Silicon Valley), 8555
3)Florida, thanks to Miami, Orlando (DisneyWorld), Tampa Bay, 8170
4)Nevada, thanks to Las Vegas 2851
5)Hawaii, thanks to Honolulu 2563 [I think Hawaii is above Nevada since the islands of Maui and the big island pull in a lot of separate tourism but this is not reflected in these statistics]
6)District of Colombia, 1698
7)Illinois, thanks to Chicago 1378
8)Massachusetts, thanks to Boston 1282
9)Texas, thanks to Houston and Dallas [where is Austin, is it not internationally recognized?] 1250
10)Pennsylvania, thanks to Philadelphia 673

From this, there is a clear separation from the mega tourist regions of

1)NYS
2)California
3)Florida

To the highly visited

4)*Nevada
5)*Hawaii

The rest are just minor peeks of interest on the American map.

Looks to me like there are 5 coastal, and 5 non-coastal states in the top 10

Most "visited" ??

That's easy, just pick the states that have the busiest AIRPORTS and numbers of flights in and out.

States like CA, NY, GA, IL, TX, FL !

International tourists probably wouldn't visit NC, but I'm sure many Americans do. After all, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (shared with TN) is the most visited national park in the country. Also, the Outer Banks are very popular along with other mountain sights (Asheville, Grandfather Mountain, etc.).

I'm sure plenty of people visit Virginia. Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Arlington, Shenandoah Valley, etc. Mainly the folks who visit DC and add some day trips out of the city.

I can't imagine all the international tourists who visit Texas expecting it to be a John Wayne western! However, I'm sure it happens.

In no particular order: New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, California, Hawaii. If DC counts, I'll definitely add it, as well. Outside of those 10, I'd add Georgia, Illinois, Arizona, and Nevada.

I didn't see anyone mention South Carolina, but the Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand area is one of the busiest vacation destinations in the country and attracts millions of visitors a year.
