Urban, but in what a geographer would call "outer city". I.e., not downtown, not inner city, not suburban. Medium density, mix of detached houses, duplexes, apartment buildings, retail/commercial. 40 foot lots, alleys in the back, tree shaded sidewalks and streets, low crime, middle income.
I live somewhere between inner city and what Ben describes here. I'm 100 yards from an el stop and right by plenty of commercial space, but my street is quiet, shady, and family friendly. Church on the corner. Food from 4 continents within a stone's throw. 5 if you've got a really good arm. Not bad.
I can't see anything but skyscrapers from where I live.
