I currently live in MI, might stay ...but thinking about leaving to FL or CA, but also open to other states.
California or Florida could work. I've lived in both. As I'm sure you're aware, California is much more expensive than Florida is. But the wages in Florida are also lower.
The good thing about these two states is that you have plenty of variety. LA is a huge city and is very expensive, but if you find the right neighborhood to live in then it wouldn't be too bad. I'd personally recommend against it if you're just starting out.
I'd look into Sacramento. It's smaller, but not too small. There's a major college there, it has decent nightlife, and it should be one of the good options. I'd stay away from other places in SoCal such as San Diego, Santa Barbara, etc. if you're looking for somewhere that's not expensive. But you're going to have to define how expensive/inexpensive you're looking for.
Most places in Florida would work. I lived in Tampa for a long time, and it's a very good balanced city. South Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, etc.) is expensive. And Jacksonville just doesn't offer much. I'd look into Tampa or Orlando. A lot of people from the midwest seem to live in Tampa, my own family moved down here from Chicago a long time ago. I don't like Tampa much myself...but it has sports teams, beaches, good nightlife, etc. Like I said, it's a good balanced city.
In most of these places, you'll definitely need a car to get around. Are you looking at CA and FL because of the weather? There might be areas in other states that would suit you. Colorado, Arizona, Oregon, etc. have a lot of cities that meet your criteria.
