Any Towns on the West Coast Similar to Key West? (2013, how much)

We're east coasters who are planning to relocate out west this year.
With its warm climate and high concentration of eating/drinking establishments & attractions all within reasonable walking (or scooter) distance of each other, Key West has long been our "go to" place for vacationing during the winter months.
What, if any towns on the west coast would you consider to be similar?
Let's say about the same we'd spend for a week to 10 days in KW. 300 or less per day for lodging; about 150-200/day for food & booze.
That's pretty low, I spent just last Wednesday night on Key West, and most lodging was 400 per night or above. Only the motels seemed to be under 300. I guess that would change if you stayed for long blocks of time.
Anyways, the answer is no. Nowhere on the west coast (but Hawaii, if you count it) will give you the tropical feel and turquoise water of Key West. But more importantly, no small town in the west will have the layout or nightlife of Key West. There is just no close equivalent.

We've got a place we typically stay at in KW that's nice, off the beaten and (for us) under 300 during the high season. It's also haunted, but that kinda comes with the territory.

That's kind of our impression too thus far, based on the relatively infrequent trips we've done up & down the WC over the years.
Avalon on Catalina is a good suggestion. Santa Barbara is not a direct analogue to Key West but it might give you some of what you seek (beach, walkable to restaurants, bars, etc.).
I think Laguna Beach CA might work. It is pretty artsy and has a nice beach.
Another town worth considering during warmer weather is Mendocino. In many ways it is not like Key West at all, but it does have a distinct sense of community and a unique location. Very compact and walkable.
I wouldn't say it's similar to Key West, but you might like Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Not cheap though!
