Which is crazy because it's a great state with awesome natural areas, very very beautiful. I go there on vacation many times a year over to the great lakes or the UP.
+37 - District of Columbia - obvious
+32 - Nevada - Las Vegas Duh
+30 - Hawaii - obvious +19 - Utah - weird? Mormon tourism?
+17 - South Carolina - Weird?
+16 - Wyoming - Yellowstone, Jacksons Hole - I see it
+13 - Alaska - small population and a lot of natural beauty +10 - South Dakota - Mount Rushmore, I can't think of anything else?
Utah
5 National Parks. Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Canyonlands.
South Dakota
Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Badlands NP, Deadwood, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Alabama; Birmingham, Space Station, Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, Senior Bowl etc. Now that I think about it, AL does have a diverse field of tourist attractions.
And Utah is definitely up there for Skiing, and it's natural beauty; same with Alaska and Wyoming.

You need to get out more.
Utah has scores of tourist destinations aside from Mormons making pilgrimages: skiing, hiking, Moab, Bryce Canyon, Park City, Salt Lake City, the Great Salt Lake ... etc.
South Carolina has Charleston and its historic sites -- you know, like Fort Sumter -- Myrtle Beach, and the foothills of the Smokies.
South Dakota has the Black Hills and the Badlands, Hot Springs, Wind Cave, Deadwood, Wall Drug .
Living as close as you do to Utah, I'm surprised you're so clueless. America has 58 National Parks. Five of them are in Utah, and all five of them outrank more than half of the total number of parks by number of visitors annually. Tourism in Utah is HUGE. Arizona, on the other hand, doesn't fare nearly so well.
SLC is a convention city and most of its hotel business caters to the convention crowds. That skews the tourism ranking imo.
Over 8 million tourists visit Utah's five national parks every year and every one of these parks is at least 4 1/2 hours away from Salt Lake City. Furthermore, there was a 70% growth in out-of-state skiers between 2002 (when we hosted the Olympic Winter Games) to 2011. Where else in the US can you find seven world-class ski resorts within 45 minutes of an international airport? A total of more than 20 million people visited Utah in 2010. Sure, Salt Lake City is a convention city, but that doesn't account for anywhere near the total 20 million visitors. Besides, studies have shown that a large number of Utah's tourists are people who came here first to a convention and liked the state enough to return with their families on vacation.

Indeed, the Black Hills are a major tourist draw in South Dakota. It's basically the economic driver of the entire state.
