Most and least transplant saturated metros of the South

VA and NC are both in the same boat, the major metros in the two states have tons of transplants but NC is clearly more southern. NOVA is far less southern than even the most transplant saturated Research Triangle suburbs.

Why does there need to be a correlation between transplanted and "not southern"? Can't Southerners be transplants too? What happens when a Southerner transplants to somewhere outside the South? My head's going to explode!!!

It has to do with the fringe areas of the South being the primary area that are transplanted by others. Take a place like Northern Virginia, or Florida, or Texas. These are the parts of the south that are the outskirts, and they places where Southern culture was already the weakest, and it is these areas that attracted the vast majority of transplants. When that happens the area can and does change. It is just how it is.
It isn't the same story for a city like Atlanta or Charlotte, who despite a respectable amount of international and northern migration, are surrounded by an ocean of "Southern-ness", and you can tell very much that Southern is the dominant culture still in those areas. That isn't the case for a place like Florida, which is surrounded water and borders the Caribbean, or Texas which is mostly surrounded by Mexico and Great Plains, or NOVA which is connected to the Bos-wash corridor. And these areas pull far more influence from their surrounding areas than the South.
I think this case you bring up would be different if all the transplants were moving to places like Birmingham, or Memphis, or Greenville, all located in the heart of the South. But the transplants mostly aren't going there. They massively settled places that were on the outskirts of the South where Southern influence was already weakest.

Those might be the noticeable transplants but they are not the only ones. The fast growing metros in the South are also attracting a very large Southern migration from both rural counties, smaller cities and the more stagnant metros.

There are many parts of Florida (northern) and Texas (eastern) that are very culturally Southern. In Florida, South Florida definitely more culturally aligned with Caribbean and Latin America and much of Texas is definitely influenced by Mexican & Southwestern culture. In fact, one could easily argue that Texas itself is its own culture. You are correct to carve off NOVA when talking about VA because it's definitely more influenced by DC than it is by the South.
I've never been to Sumter but I have always been under the assumption that it was more or less part of the Columbia Metro. Spartanburg would be considered the Upstate no?
Once again have to remind you that I tend to forget about Florence but I see where it becomes its own metro.
Nah Sumter has always been its own metro; it's not even in the Columbia CSA.
Spartanburg is in the Upstate but is still its own city and MSA.
