What are some small cities and towns (under 100,000 people) that people have visited which have extensive intellectual (educational, scientific) and arts and cultural amenities? I'm only familiar with some places in the US West.

I now live in the east and am looking for small relaxing places like this. Any ideas? Towns from anywhere in the US would be greatly appreciated.

Sedona, Arizona seems like nice, artsy town surrounded by Red Rock. I also took a visit to a secluded, although fun, town in Utah called Moab this past summer. Very beautiful -- situated next to some very surreal rock formations.

Sedona is uber expensive-----and, Flagstaff (30 miles away) is almost as bad.

That stated: Flag for its size is loaded with cultural amenities. Just cold winters against it.

You describe alot of college towns. Do you want liberal or conservative areas? North or South? More towards 100,000, or 25,000? There are a half-dozen cities in Minnesota alone that would be very nice.

I'm just looking for places with an interest in intellectual activities and the arts outside of big cities. They should be under 100,000. This is mostly just for a place to visit. Politics are not important, but I would imagine that cities like this would tend to be liberal.
