Nope.

This is the number 1 fantasy of suburbanites

People need to stop doing this.

Maybe they need to stop if they're saying it in the Chicago metro, but it's fair to say if it's being said to someone out of state. As far as they would know, Naperville could be in the southern part of the state. Splitting hairs on this one is silly.

right... but that's never how it is.

First of all how about showing some pride in where you're from and educating someone in another part of the country who has never heard of your city? Chicagoans like to even tell you what neighborhood they're from. Not just 'I'm from Chicago' but 'Bridgeport, Southside of Chicago'. Naperville, Aurora and Joliet are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th largest cities in Illinois.. Naperville has been voted one of the best cities in the country in its own right. man up and let people know.

but usually when I'm traveling it goes 'oh you're from Chicago? where at?' -- 'ummm... actually (insert some completely separate city like Rockford/Decatur/Peoria or somewhere in Wisconsin or Indiana like Kenosha or Gary)' Happens every time.

oh yea and there's nothing wrong with saying you're from Illinois either. be real is all.. not too much to ask
