Nice to see a city I have long been a proponent of and is oft-overlooked in general scored at #8 (Winston Salem NC), as it has a lot to offer in my opinion.

It actually ranked 10th which is still pretty high; it's definitely an underrated city.

I call BS to these surveys. Outside of financial health, the criteria is highly subjective and or stupid. Using body-mass index is dumb and only highlights stupidity. You can be almost all muscle and have a high BMI.

Denver 25th...that has to be a joke...

Sense of purpose: They don't move like they have any purpose. Sunday driving 24/7/365.

Social health: Not really...it is surprisingly pretentious and cold. It is kind of funny that Seattle has a higher social health ranking than Denver, even though Seattle has the stereotypical freeze attached to it.

Financial health: The economy isn't that diverse, decent paying jobs outside of being in STEM or an admin assistant are few and far between, and housing (both renting and buying) is skyrocketing. The average salary is upper $40s to mid $50s, but that is after the entire compensation package is added up. In actual salary it has to be somewhere in the $30s maybe low $40s, but since this is a very pro-business state with a surplus of young, cheap workers they really nickel and dime you.

Community: It is a city of transients, so outside of cliques there isn't much community. I will give them a little bit of a break and point out that the sense of community at the local level is lessening everywhere because of the internet and gentrification. Neighborhoods are being destroyed so hipsters can have their "cool" trendy apartments.

Physical: There aren't as many skinny people as I thought there would be. This place is also like a dehydrator because of the thin, dry air. So average activity levels in these conditions will make you look healthier than you actually are.

Off-topic...the people that planned this metro area are idiots. Instead of building a strong business core downtown and spread it outwards from there like most cities do, they built it 10-15 miles south of downtown (the DTC) and away from where the majority of people in the metro area live. They really blew it because it could have been an incredible and very energetic downtown that rivaled San Francisco, Chicago, and the cities in the northeast, instead it is pretty limp and lame compared to the fore-mentioned cities.

What they have is crazy sprawl, and the inability and pointlessness of building a great public transportation system which leads to an over reliance on cars on roads that really cannot be widened because of pre-existing structures. The only options are imminent domain, which isn't going to fly because people would have like 5 feet between the curb and their house or business, or if things get really bad making streets one way which is hard to believe would occur. I think they planned it out by throwing darts at a map.
