Not true exactly. I was in London not too long ago, and when I said I was from Philly, the most common references people had was Fresh Prince, Rocky, City of Brotherly Love, and cheesesteaks. Not once did I hear Philadelphia Cream Cheese mentioned.
Chicago historically and now has played a major role in education, politics, economics, etc. that is unquestionable. Im looking at the whole picture here. Culturally alone it destroys Texas.
Texas is extremely important to all of those things mentioned. How does it "destroy" Texas culturally?
LA has the world's third largest economy, and a bigger population than London, Paris, or Moscow. It has twice the population of Hong Kong or Singapore. It's the entertainment capital of the planet.
If LA isn't a "major city", then there are only two "major cities" on earth, at least in the first world- Tokyo and NYC.

Agreed, more or less. I'm not a big fan of Los Angeles, but there's no way at all to deny that it is clearly among America's most important cities. New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles are our three most important cities, beyond any doubt. What order you put them in depends on how you rank the importance of finance, government, entertainment, etc. But there can be no doubt that those are the "Big Three."

NY: Finance, Corporate, Pharma, Media
LA: Entertainment, Aerospace
DC: Fed Govt
Boston: Research
Houston: Energy
Detroit: Auto (barely, but still)
Denver: Telecom
Orlando: Tourism
Orlando is #1 in tourism so it gets to wear that title over all others, even Vegas.
Alternative, IT, forward thinking, non-conformist: San Francisco
Christian: Nashville
Academic: Boston
Entertainment, consumerism, youth culture: LA
Political, power, tradition: Washington, DC
Money, global, urbanity: NYC
Midwestern: Kansas City
Ghetto/trailer trash: St. Louis (don't shoot, I'm part of the family)
American dream (big house, big car, etc.): Houston
African-American: Atlanta
Frontier & outdoors: Denver
Vice: Las Vegas
