Any other state with low college costs for residents, beside California? (coupon, apartment)

Hi everyone,

I am planning on moving out of state (from NJ) and one of my considerations is college costs. Here, it is soo much more expensive than say California! (I am only referring to college costs, not cost of living.) College in Ca is nearly 1/4 of what it costs here more or less!

Does anyone know of any other states that cover as much as Ca. does for in-state residents? A good community college that is more cost effective than here is what I am looking for. Of course, after that I will need a good 4 yr. college.

I have a long ways to go yet to finish, but I am definitely going to start going again in the fall, regardless of my location. Only in NJ, it is very expensive, though I love that our community college has most of it's classes available online. I am a stay at home mom who had kids before college..wrong order, but it has worked out fine for me.)

Tuition at the University of Colorado is about $3000 per semester for instate students (varies somewhat by major). That is low, I think, compared to other states. In-state tuition at Penn State, is ~ 5000/semester.

You will have to prove you are a resident. Generally that means living in the state for a year, and being emancipated from your parents if you are a minor. Every state has similar rules.

Just to give a comparison, here is some data.

Califonia community college:
California residents are charged $26 per unit for community college courses. A typical course is 3 or 4 units, for a cost of $78 to $104. A student who enrolls in 12 units is considered a full-time student - that student would pay $26 x 12 units = $312 per semester.

Nj community college (the college I attend):
As of July 1, 2007 tuition is $103 per credit (to a maximum of $1,545 per term, based on a 15-credit maximum);

So essentially it is $24.00 per credit in Cali, and $103 per credit in NJ. So...about $100 or less for Cali per class, and $300+ per class in NJ.

Can anyone else out there tell me their costs?

Georgia has something called the Hope Scholarship. Google it. It offers free tuition to state universities and a portion of the tuition for in-state private schools.

University Missouri St. Louis is about 4,874.76 for 18 credit hours without parking.
Mizzou is $235.90 a credit hour ($355.20 for Non-Missouri residents).

Parking: Washington University has ample evening parking space in well-lighted lots. Parking is by permit or meter only. An evening student parking permit, good for the 2006-2007 academic year, costs $93.

Not saying they're cheap, just giving everybody (including myself) the info.

The Closest community college here (Poplar Bluff) is Three Rivers Community College. It's a nice school, it's not probably sa esteemed as universities, though. Here's a chart Fall*2007*&*beyond*Tuition*and*Fees It's gonna be about $3,000 for the year. The town is only about 15,000-20,000 people, though. Cost of living is fairly low. There's no public transportation as far as I know.

Welcome, Southeast Missouri State University my sister's school is nice as well. It's in Cape Girardeau, which is bigger than Poplar Bluff.

Do keep in mind that Missouri typically has lower cost of living, smaller towns even cheaper than STL and KC, but I don't know how much difference cost of living makes. Different schools also charge different rates if you live on campus. My sis lives in Sikeston in a 1BR apartment for $300/month.

Front Range Community College is the largest CC in Colorado. Here is the tuition for the Westminster (main) campus. Note the Colorado opportunity fund is available to pretty much everyone with state residency.

Tuition: Resident students pay $166.15 per credit hour and non-resident students pay $357.25 per credit hour. Colorado residents eligible for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) will receive an estimated credit of $89.00 per credit hour on their tuition bill, reducing the student share of tuition to $77.15 per credit hour.

New York's instate tuition is one of the cheapest on the east coast, however the school's aren't nearly as good as what they have in California (UCLA, Berkely).

The best in NY state are probably Binghampton and Geneseo.
