It seems like people on the East Coast are very into complaining about things, while West Coast people are very intolerant of people who complain. In my opinion the former is actually better because complaining can be a constructive thing. Without complaining there is no feedback or impetus for improvement.

I get the idea living on the West Coast that everyone thinks the place is already as good as it can be and anyone who has a gripe with anything no matter how justified is just a "whiner" who should just shut their mouth and keep positive. On the East Coast people are more likely to moan and complain about things yes, but they're also more likely to DO something about their problem.

Would you say that's pretty much accurate?

Complain about what kinds of things? Can you be more specific?

I live on the West Coast and wonder where you got this curious idea that everyone here thinks it's "already as good as it could be." Far from it, in my experience.

When I was visiting the West Coast a lot of their spoiled rich complained a lot about silly things like their car was not near new or fancy enough for the Hollywood crowd or their house was not big enough it was quite sad, I felt ashamed to be American.. lot of the world can't even afford clean drinking water and we complain our 5000 square foot homes are not big enough.

People on the East Coast have the weather to complain about, which they can't do anything about.

Those I know from the Seattle area are the worst complainers. They believe the US, except the PNW, is full of ignorant uneducated people who want to destroy the world. The truth is they are overeducated hipsters who lack any common sense and knowledge of the real world. Portlandia is funny because it is based on reality.

There are a lot of big, blanket statements here.

I would say that in some parts of the interior West (El Paso, Albuquerque, Spokane, most of Utah, all of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana), people are so laidback they tend to no not be bothered by the small things, but will speak up when there is a problem.

Other parts of the West where new money tends to congregate (Orange County, CA or Scottsdale, AZ), people tend to have more feelings of entitlement, and thus tend to complain more often when things don't go their way.

In most other suburban parts of the West, there are just so many transplants it really just reflects the rest of the country.

It's also is fallacy to say East Coasters complain a lot. Yes, some parts of the East Coast (Long Island, in particular) do have that stereotype, but in general, I've found downstate New Yorkers to be the most helpful, friendly people in the country.

Furthermore, the people least likely to publicly complain, are old money East Coasters.

I recently took a Peter Pan bus ride from DC to NYC. It was as comfortable as a plane ride and costed me $19.

What in the world do people in this country complain about? First world problems indeed. LOL.
