I like the sprawly suburbanness but I prefer to be in a more conservative state. I want to be in a major city and Phoenix is too hot. Somewhere with a similar built environment to the San Fernando Valley in a red state with not 110 degree weather would be cool

If you can deal with humidity, you might like Jacksonville or Houston.
If you want dry weather, Salt Lake City could work.
