How is this such a difficult concept?

America was colonized by people who came from blue-eyed countries and their children inherited their blue eyes. Later on, large numbers of people immigrated from brown-eyed countries, who significantly increased the brown-eyed gene pool.

Given that model, what would you have predicted would happen to the distribution of eye color, even if you had no scientific knowledge of genetics at all?

Basically, this.

Around 1900, most Americans were of British, Scottish, Irish, or German descent, i.e. northern Europeans. But at this time, there was a huge influx of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, who were more likely to have darker hair and brown eyes. Then, as the 20th century went along, southern and eastern European immigrant groups started becoming generically "white" and intermarrying with the blond-haired, blue-eyed people of northern European stock, and their kids are more likely to have darker hair and brown eyes. Add in the recent influx of Hispanic and Asian people, and you can see why blond hair and blue eyes has declined so rapidly, even though the genes aren't disappearing.

30 percent of Southern Europeans have light eyes, so it is not exactly a rare trait when 3 out of every 10 Southern Euro does not have brown eyes.

The trend started around 1900, so it seems to be related to less of the population coming Southern Europe where people have been mixing with Arabs over millennial and have more Mediterranean traits. Since it's a recessive trait if an old stock Anglo American marries an Italian American the kids are less likely to have blue eyes.

White skin and blue eyes have little to do with each other.

Most Italians carry the genes for blue eyes. So even Italians who do not have blue eyes themselves, there is still someone in their family tree who did.

A person who is half Northern European and half Italian has a way higher chance of being born with blue eyes than someone who is half Northern European and half African American for example.

Chris Evans, Steve Buscemi, John Cena, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta, Bradley Cooper, etc are all half Italian and half Northern European and they all have blue eyes.

I don't know. Isn't the implied tone of this thread 'white anxiety, white panic"? Is the US turning brown?

For christ sakes...read up on how genetics work please, people! There are dominant and recessive genes, and a person who is dark with brown eyes may well also have genes that will produce blondes with blue eyes. Match/match/quarter.

And I agree with ABQ, it's most likely a brown-hating bait thread.
