The "almost carribbean" comment is interesting. I have thought that for so long, and I figured nobody else really was. But, yeah... this even applies to North Carolina too. Especially now that these young guys are growin hella dreads. Talk to someone whos like a third or fourth generation product of Columbia or Augusta or North Charleston and culturally he or she will have a lot low-key similarities to, say, Barbadians or Virgin Islanders or something. It's definitely almost carribbean in its own way. Less racially charged, though.

Dreads aren't a Caribbean thing. They aren't nearly as prevalent in the rest of the Antilles as they are with the Rastafarians in Jamaica.

Most Black Americans get dreads for no other reason than the fact that they like the way it looks or they might be trying to make some misguided cultural statement. Hell, I'm convinced that most of the dreaded men in Georgia just like having long hair. They don't anything about the Lion of Judah.

^ the term dread head sounds stereotypical.
[tangent]
why are white people allowed to have brown/black/blonde/golden/curly/... locks but black people can only have dread (scary) locks ?

I'm going to predict an uproar when the folks from Memphis hear they are being considered Appalachian, and living in a 'country' ghetto.

It is very true that many blacks in Memphis have family up north, Chicago seems to be the place I've heard mentioned most often.

LOL I imagine you will predict correctly...

This doesn't include highly/predominately Black suburbs in the bigger metros and smaller places with enough Black people to know that they are there like Portsmouth, Fremont, Fostoria, Bellaire, East Liverpool, Martins Ferry, Massillon, Ashtabula, Zanesville, Chillicothe and many other smaller communities.
Very true on the above. Lorain and Lima especially I know a lot of black people who moved to Cleveland or Toledo from those areas and all the above you mentioned historically even have had a black population since the 1830s-1880s primarily due to all being stops on the Underground Railroad. My family migrated to Ohio in the 1850s and 1860s from PA due to the Fugitive Slave law of 1857 and the actions of white southerners stealing free blacks into slavery in PA. Moving to Ohio was a way to get further away from that threat and the further north one went the better. Sandusky used to have a section called "Negro-Town" where a lot of blacks fleeing slavery settled and Indian populations in that area also helped escaped slaves along with black residents and white residents. Central and NE and NW Ohio in particular had a lot of abolitionist minded people in the area since the beginning of statehoood and that is reflected in current populations of black Americans in these areas. Many former enslavers also freed their slaves and purchased land for them in in Ohio to resettle them out of slave states. One that I am looking into is called the "Gist" settlements. One of my ancestors lived in the vicinity of one of these settlements near Greenfield/Highland County.

In actuality about 70% of the growth over the last 20 years is from domestic migration, about 30% comes from east Africans. Minneapolis is a big magnet for working class blacks leaving Chicago, and has been since the '80s.

The standard story is that blacks are leaving the rust belt for cities like Atlanta and other places in the south, which is true; but black people are also leaving the rust belt for cities like Minneapolis, Indianapolis and Columbus, and also some smaller cities like Des Moines and Madison. The numbers aren't has high as the return to the south, but it is still a thing.
I also agree with the above. As stated, I live in Toledo and there are many black people here who have resettled in other places (including myself until I moved back last year after living in Atlanta for over 16 years). Most move to Columbus or Cleveland. Cleveland is seeing a resurgence and even though native black Clevland-ers are moving there are other blacks in Ohio moving to Cleveland and Columbus especially. I also know a lot of people who have moved to Minneapolis over the past 10-15 years due to good schools and low crime and not being as far away from family as moving to Texas, which it seems is where a lot of people are moving now - TX or AZ. Atlanta is actually not as big a draw anymore IMO but they still get a lot of blacks moving there but not as many as there used to be. Most IMO are moving to TX. I knew a lot of black people who moved to Atlanta who subsequently moved to TX due to there being a lack of jobs in Atlanta during the economic downturn in comparison to Dallas or Houston.

If your state is not included its because the black population is small or we don't know about it. Please dont be hurt, INFORM US!

We ordered them from top to bottom in terms of influence and prominence. BUT I WOULD LOVE YOUR OPINION TO SHARE WITH THEM. some regions we just dont know a lot about and would like any input if you could!! Let the bickering begin!

4.
The Midwest- IL MO MI OH IN: Hardest hit by deindustrialization. Used to be a model of middle class black prosperity stability and upward mobility. Very cold, segregated, and the southern portions of all these states except Michigan have a real redneck vibe black must contend with. These states are 12% black on average with 50% black cities on average. They dress really well out here. Furs top hats, all that type of flashy pimp like stuff when they go out. Younger generation influenced by Drill music. Blacks here tend to be very culturally aware as they are in the plain states. They are similar to those in the lain states but give off a more aggressive vibe probably due to their larger numbers. They are also influenced by The Deep South and the Tri State. For better or for worse these are seen as indicative of the black population and our economic state throughout the country.

Seems like fur coats and top hats are largely an NY thing, although you see it on occasion out here in the Midwest.

9.
Appalachia- TN KY WV

The population varies widely from 3-4% black in WV to 17% black in TN. Tjey live in the heart of Klan land. Usually in very country ghettoes in places like Rand, WV or Memphis Tennessee. They have a pretty noticeable impact on black culture and are known. They have funny accents though, but this changes in Western Tennessee where it gets quite black and more Delta influenced. These folk seem to have a lot of relatives in Indiana Ohio and Michigan. Even Pennsylvania, this share a culture with the midwest more so than with the coastal south and Chesapeake to the east and south. Again we did not know much about these black since we have never been to these states and dont know the area.

Everything you're saying about Western TN is fairly accurate. Memphis, being the largest and most important city of the Delta region, would def disappoint on your expectations of being "appalacian," or "country ghetto." The accents, are indeed, kinda funny, though LOL

10.
The North- MN WI : 6% Black states BUt very very different. Wisconsin shares much more in common with the plains states and the Mid west due to proximity most likely. The white legislators and populous seems more prejudiced. Maybe its due to Milwaukee resembling the inner cities of Cleveland or Chicago. While Wisconsin is a middle of the road state itis usually ranked one of the wost states for black people to live. Minnesota on the other hand, although historically has a tiny black population is now one of the fastest groing black populations do primarily to East African immigrants. There is also a strong strong liberal bent in this state tht makes it more open to blacks. Culturally there isnt much to say about these guys since they're not in the spot light. I do know that they make some decent musicians on the low. K-Camp, Rico Love-WI, Prince and Cardo-MN. Minnesota has a burgeoning basketball presence on the collegiate and High School level as do most cold weather black people. ...WASHINGTON.

11.
The Flat Plains- NE KS IA 3-6% black areas. Blacks here are generally forgotten and live in cities or surrounding towns that are 15-25% black. There domains appear to be somewhat run down btu largely suburban. I was told from my Chicago friend these are Black people who were pushed out of the larger and blacker Mid Western states for one reason or the other. There seems to be a high degree of anti black sentiment in these areas amongst whites. Personally I couldnt see myself living out here at all. Needing a car to go everywhere and living under permafrost in the winter. Lots of these blacks have family members that moved out west to California to pursue their dreams, and maybe in Nevada or Arizona right now. They dont seem to be country but their accent is a mix of Mid Western/Upland South with a little bit of that Black California accent. I generally like the black out there as they seem to be racially aware and down to earth. Not living in abject o poverty, not really wealthy, just living.

Athough our temps are a little more extreme in the Midwest compared to the east, I wouldn't describe our winters as "permafrost." LOL On average, it doesn't get MUCH colder in this part of the country than it does on the east coast. Diff is we have no mountains or ocean to moderate our temperatures, hence the big swings.

And while I see how you would come up with those various observations, it seems as if there's just a touch of hyperbole. Basically, much of what you said about the "Midwest" applies to the two above regions, as well, given that these regions are sub-regions of the greater Midwest and not wholly separate regions.

"The West- CA OR WA NV CO AZ Probably the most integrated of the substantial black populations out there. Many of these black people date inter-racially and have an accent where they say all the R's in word heavily. Kind of southern but different accent wise. They like chill music, party rap music and have a very laid back gangster style when they decide to get gangsta. The black youth out there seem to love living in shiny new subdivisions, smoking weed and getting 'ratchet'. Very likely to have Asian or Mexican friends. These states range from 3-8.5% black...being about 5% on average. Car Centric culture. Appears to be a really laid back lifestyle with not too much focus on advancement like in the tri State. Metro areas About 7% black on average. All black American. Fashion wise prefer tank tops cargo shorts graphic tees and brighter colors. WASHINGTON has a huge Basketball culture. huge."

HAHA wow you hit it spot on. Blacks out here have mexican friends for sure, but I usually find that blacks out west have a lot of white friends too. The black males for sure do a lot of interracial dating with all races out here. Although I think you can't loop all west black folk together. To me there are two types: LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix- culture if very similar, vans high socks, skateboarding, weed, embrace of mexican sayings and culture, listen to the same music and basketball is HUGE out here. The bay area blacks have a culture of their own and are very different from other west coast blacks. Seattle, Portland blacks I have not had that much experience with but I would assume that just like whites, the black culture up in the northwest is different from the rest of the west coast.

Most west coast blacks don't live in the city but rather tend to the suburbs in large amounts, I see it in Phoenix and LA all time. I think that's a huge difference in the west coast black experience as apposed to out east where in DC, Philly, NYC, even boston it seems like a huge amount of blacks live in the cities there along with the midwest.

This is a good point, as the percentages of Blacks in many Western metros seems to spread out somewhat evenly throughout a large area of those metros. So, in the Phoenix area, the population isn't just concentrated within the city of Phoenix and then some out in the suburbs, but you also have Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Peoria, etc. with a similar percentage as well.
