New Mexico for the Southwest, not Arizona at all. NM has the history, ORIGINATED the culture, architecture, food, and atmosphere. Santa Fe goes back hundreds of years. Arizona looks like ersatz South West. .Those who say Arizona have most likely never been to NM. Arizona does have the iconic look of the Southwest in its landscapes, though.

North East: I'm honestly tempted to say New Jersey. Western NY state arguably has midwestern qualities.
South East Coastal: South Carolina (Florida is sui generis imo)
South: Mississippi
Mid Atlantic: Maryland
Midwest: Indiana
West Coast: California
South West: New Mexico

North East: Massachusetts (New York can't embody the NE. It's an outlier in size, population, demographics, influence, etc)

South East Coastal: Florida

South: Alabama (Georgia, with Atlanta, becomes another regional outlier. AL has a more of a Old South/New South mix)

Mid Atlantic: Maryland

Midwest: Ohio (Illinois, like NY, is also an outlier in the Midwest. Way different than the rest of it because of Chicago)

West Coast: California

South West: New Mexico (Arizona, as has been said before, is just too new)

What made you say Indiana?

My choice to choose Illinois was based off of my thoughts that when people hear the term "Midwest" they likely think of two things:

-Cornfields, which Illinois has a LOT of
-The major city in the Midwest, Chicago

Of course this is just my opinion.
