My boyfriend and I are a young couple starting out. We live in small town Fernley Nevada and we need a change. OR, ID and WA are our top choices as we love the outdoors. We're having a hard time picking where to go. We would prefer not to live in a big city (200K or less) and my boyfriend has to be able to ride his dirt bike whenever he wants (one of the perks of living in the desert). So far I am thinking Boise, ID, but I would like some more insight on Oregon and Washington.
Your right, latte sipping, it is different here, I say do it this way trust your instincts, if we all could learn how much of a radar system we have in our instincts how much trouble and misery we could save ourselves. Already your instincts show Idaho has more of what you want. If latte sipping would not be appealing to you here, I can bet you will find many other things not appealing also. Trust your instincts.
Go on the net and pull up each place, get all the info you can muster, and then compare the two areas. People can tell you about each, but its how both places will feel to you. Oregon very wet east of the cascades, more marine type cloudy moist dreary climate, with a short sunny summer. Boise dryer and much hotter in summer, summer last longer there also. Boise I believe has very good trails all over it from what I have been told. I think they have a good economy for jobs, Oregon needs to really work on that one.
Oregon because A it's more interesting than Idaho, B because it is as disaster-prone as Washington. Washington has too many volcanoes for me to ever consider calling it home. Nice place...too dangerous for me hehe.
Really? Geologist monitor the Washington volcanos extensively, if one were to blow we would more than likely have fair warning. There are so many thing that are so much more likely to kill you, Besides, the way I see it, if you're gonna go out, you might as well go out with a bang. No bigger bang than a volcano.
Do you need to work? You need to give more specific information to get specific answers.
And not all of Oregon and Washington are latte sipping folk. As in most of both states are not. Maybe in downtown Portland and Seattle. The rest is rural for the most part, and gun-toting, hunting, types of people.
If you don't need to work, and can just spend all day riding dirt bikes, then just look for the weather you'd prefer to do that in. Look for areas that have dirt bike trails.
And consider what kind of weather you want to ride your dirt bikes in, I guess.
There are communities that meet your goals throughout the PNW.
Explore places like Wenatchee, WA, Tri-Cities, WA, and Hermiston, OR. Plus, if you don't mind a maritime climate, Astoria, OR, Coos Bay, OR, and more inland, Medford, OR. All these places have a reasonable cost of living, and that can be a deal breaker.
Once you gather up some information on some cities that might suit your needs (that we would be better helping you out with if you stated more of them) you might want to narrow them down and visit them in person before making a decision. I like Idaho, though.
