Forgot about the Adirondacks. They might be what you are looking for.

Grayson Highlands state park in southwestern Virginia. Travelled and lived all over the west and this is still my favorite place in the continental US.

Agree. Washington state in the PNW, Northern Cascades, is most like the alps. But you can't telecommute here!

This is one of my favorite places too, and in fact would probably be a more practical place to live and telecommute than in Western mountain ranges. Internet reception is likely a factor, so I would look at NC, Va, and TN mtn towns. The NC Blue Ridge Parkway is absolutely green and beautiful.

Closest feel to the open alpine feeling of the Alps in the Eastern US is the President Range in New Hampshire. In the entire US(which goes outside of the boundaries of what the OP is looking for apparently), I'd say the Colorado Rockies, the North Cascades, the higher meadows of the Olympic Range, the Rockies around Glacier National Park(and the Canadian Rockies to the north) have the most alp-like scenery.

Though if you catch a lot of mountain ranges in the US when the meadows are still green they can look sort of like the Alps--I've been in the Sierra Nevada or Wallowas of Oregon or Wasatch of Utah when they just had rain or the snow just melted and everything was very green in comparison(though when it's dry everything can turn yellow/brown--even in the Alps themselves).
