I like Southern culture in general, but I'm not a fan of conservative politics. Are there areas in the South where me being a liberal atheist would not offend people? I'm not particularly fond of the culture of the West Coast and Northeast, as I prefer people who are more outgoing and don't beat around the bush.

Yes, there are more liberal places in the South.

Southerners tend to be outgoing, but are not as direct as Northerners.

Bigger cities in the South will generally be more accepting, though church culture is still pretty strong.

Of course. Why would you think otherwise?

The South is NOT monolithic, exactly like every other region.

Frankly, I don't understand why there are so many threads about whether or nor a liberal will be happy some place because of its politics. I'm a conservative and whether or not an area is conservative has little bearing on my opinion of it.

Some people can't be happy anywhere.

Depends on the liberal. Some liberals can live anywhere, and do not offend anyone.

If you let politics determine what you like or where you travel, you are missing out on great people and places. I have extreme views on politics and religion and have never had any problems with people anywhere due to that. Good people are good people despite who they vote for or what they do on sunday. I moved from NEPA and Vermont to Kentucky, a conservative, religious state by anyones standards, and never looked back. I dread going back east after basing my lifestyle in the more southern areas of KY and SC.

I've noticed this to a great extent here on CD. You see a lot of members who self-identify as liberal unwilling or uncertain to live in an area where there is a chance there are not a lot of like-minded people around. This does not seem to be an issue with members who self-identify as conservatives.
