Here's some charming, affordable houses which aren't in the ghetto. I find them charming anyway, and I'm real anal about interiors not being "updated" (I hate when gorgeous woodwork is painted). Your milage may vary. Walkability varies considerably however.

Those houses are my style.
I love brick/stone homes with large porches-the detail in some old homes is remarkable-crown molding, wooden floors with chestnut or mahogany trim, fireplaces, stained glass windows etc..
Most of these have really nice sized yards too.
Here's an example in Philly pertaining to the thread-single family home for less than $200,000 in a safe neighborhood. This house is actually around the corner from me-the yard makes the price a bargain IMO.
Over 6,000 square feet of land and property taxes are less than $2k a year.
