Couple corrections for you citizens of the internet:

Portland is most likely called Stumptown because the people are such heels, that's just a fact of anthropolgy.

No one calls St Louis 'Red Brick Mama' except the same kind of self-aggrandizing local-yokels who call Cardinals fans the 'best in baseball'

Denver IS Men-ver.

Charlotteans might call themselves 'Queen City', but Cincy is "The Queen City".

Helena would have to become a city, first, to be the Queen City of Anything.

Everywhere thinks its River City.

Are these just your personal takes on these cities, regardless of what the locals call them?

Nah, Charlotte is named after Queen Charlotte herself. The QC, The Queen city, whatever you call it, it's Charlotte.

Portland's nickname of "Stumptown" dates from the founding of the city - the area was forested, so when they cleared the original town site, there were a lot of stumps. Nowadays the city prefers to be known as the Rose City.

Seattle is Emerald City.

Boston is The Hub (of the Universe)

Plainfield NJ is one of many places called Queen City.

I'm glad you cleared up Portland. I was going to if you hadn't.

Seattle may be The Emerald City, but hardly anyone except out of town sportscasters use it. Seattle was once "The Jet City", until a whole bunch of jobs were cut in the early 70's. However, there are still businesses that use it, and of course there was Queensryche's "Jet City Woman". (1990).

And speaking of the many "Queen Cities", Seattle once had that nickname as well.
