Cary's has been around for decades now and it certainly earned its nickname by a population swollen with transferees that started with hordes of IBMers 4-5 decades ago. Sometimes I just here "The containment area"....if you have to ask, you don't need to know.
Another funny one I've heard for a suburb of Raleigh is Garnerreah for Garner. Needless to say, Garner's not as posh as Cary.
In reading through this reopened thread. For Chicago I've seen Windy City and a couple others. But NO "SECOND CITY".
Some claim it denotes second to NYC? It works too. But it dates back more to the time just after the "Great Chicago Fire". Then it denoted a NEW SECOND CITY (from a first) rising from the ashes. That still works today.
Allegedly Columbus was once known as "Arch city" for the decorative arches over its streets. No one calls it that today although there is a bar in The Short North called Short North Tavern. "C-bus" is probably the most popular nickname or the area code "614".
Winnipeg is AKA "Winterpeg" <--- OK, Canada, but I thought it was funny.
Fayetteville, NC AKA "Fayettenam"
Camden, NJ AKA "Don't go There"
Charlotte, NC (Mecklenberg Co) AKA "The Queen City" It was named for Queen Charlotte Mecklenberg, wife of King George the third.

They sound not just deprecating, but plain trashy. For the most part, the people who use those nicknames live up to the sentiment they evoke.
There's always gonna be hood rats (and wanna-be hood rats) who have nicknames like that in every city. Cincinnati's true nickname is "Queen City", going back to its emergence in the 19th century.
Oakland, my hometown, is one of the only major city which doesn't have a traditional nickname, so the modern ones like "Oaktown", "The O" or just "The Town" (as opposed to SF, "The City"), usually fit.
