Speaking from experience here. I lived there for 13 years, am Roman Catholic, or "non-Mormon", and no, you would not be "out-of-place".

If you go anywhere with pre-conceived notions and expectations you'll definitely find something to validate those notions. I'm not saying Salt Lake is perfect, there are A-holes everywhere. But most find it no different than any other US city. The city proper itself is quite liberal, hasn't had a Republican mayor in 40 years, and is considered somewhat of a "gay mecca".

SLC usually rates very high in quality of life, friendliness and job opportunities. If it weren't for the "Mormon factor" it would probably be twice the size it is now. It has one of the most beautiful physical settings in the country.

If their economy had more STEM jobs, a place with great boating and gorgeous beaches like like the keys in florida or st simons or sanibel, hilton head, etc . My dad moved out of the caribbean after a year because of the expenses of living on an island and importing everything and the lack of strong tech infrastructure to do business, I am still pissed to this day. It is hard to find high paying jobs in alot of dream spots.

edit: sorry didnt read the first post .I doubt these places pertain

I would choose the Pacific Northwest or New England. Both are close to the ocean, which I miss. Very fresh seafood would be a big bonus.

True that.

Unfortunately, the flights to Arkansas would be about 6 hours, plus a two hour drive. (Realization: "anywhere" in the US is really "anywhere less than a 4.5 hour flight.")

New leaders:
- Colorado Springs
- Indianapolis
- Austin
- Pittsburgh
- Cincinnati?
- Jackson, MS?
- Little Rock
- St Louis

... now that it's October, the south doesn't seem so bad :P
