I live in Indiana, and while it's certainly not the most exciting place, I'd certainly miss the locally grown food scene and Indiana craft beer if I moved off.
Lots of things: the sun, the dry air, the mountains, the cacti, the impeccable freeways, the sunsets, the hiking, the car shows, the Mexican food... too much to list.
I would miss the beach. But I have traveled enough around the country to know that there are MANY wonderful areas to live in and I could be happy most anywhere (but probably not in the middle of a large city)
I would miss my walkable, vibrant neighborhood. Lake Erie, a river, a harbor, my best friend, and almost every type of business establishment I could ever need are within about four blocks of my apartment.
I'd miss my family. I'd miss the beauty of my town, which is very pleasant and has lots of amenities. If I moved out of Texas, I'd miss Texans. I'd miss the vibrancy and diversity and heady mixture of cultures in this area. I'm sure other areas could offer something similar, but I'd miss the whole Tex Mex vibe. I love it here.
When I moved to Denver I missed the food here in Chicagoland, and I know that would be the case if I moved away again. People talk about the pizza, the Italian beef, and the sausage, but it has some of the best Mexican food in the nation.
I wouldnt miss alot in DC and the part of Maryland I commute to and from, there are some fantastic restaurants and clubs and bars in DC but you can increasingly find that in any decent sized city, DC does have the best museums in the country but I would rather have horses and farmland and access to warmer weather and beaches and fishing , just more land and elbow room than the little bit you get in this very expensive and small state. I definitely hate this traffic, some of the worst I have ever experienced. Maryland in alot of places is like connecticut, you pay a ton for alot less than you would get anywhere else but there are parts of maryland that I deeply love and that are gorgeous.
The traffic wears you down living around DC if you have to drive alot, I wouldnt miss much but I should have never got myself in this kind of daily grind in traffic every day. It all depends on your lifestyle I guess
