Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada. We go every year at least once and have since the 1960s. Not many lakes can compare, but we also like the more local Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park for a less developed experience.

Really, not my opinion, but a scientific fact regarding what is classified as a lake.. I do prefer cold weather, far colder than most Americans even know how to deal with.

Grand Lake in Colorado is a favorite of mine! Right at the backdoor of RMNP!!! Tough to find a better setting for a lake in the US! I wish Colorado had more lakes though!
