My family and I (Mom, Dad, and me [16]) are looking to find a place to move to in either Northern CA, Eastern OR, or Southern WA. Unfortunately we are having a difficult time deciding on where to go exactly. Our family lives in Portland, OR, and we enjoy the central coast of California; however, we have also been looking at Bend, OR. We don't want something more than half an hour from a city or suburb because we still want the amenities that go along with cities and towns (you know Costco, Home Depot, Hospitals). As long as we are not more than a day's drive from Portland, it would be great to find something that covers all or most of what we are looking for.

- My parent's like the chaparral of Northern California, but the only thing I can think of is that dry grass and fires don't mix.
- I enjoy the more mountainous areas of the world (the Rocky Mountains are beautiful, but they are too far from family)
- Having a river or stream near us for fishing for be amazing
- Again, not more than 30 minutes from a hospital and other amenities.
- Trees, but not too many that you can't see more than two feet in front of you
- Access to hiking trails, rock climbing, and other outdoorsy activities

It's not much to go on, but I hope that you guys know more about the areas up there than we do. Thank you so much!

Check out Carson City, Nevada which is just east of Lake Tahoe. It's a smaller town of 30K yet with all the conveniences (including quality hospitals, Costco and Home Depot) due in part to the fact it's the state capital. In terms of geography it hits all of your criteria with extensive greenery/trees, nearby mountains, rivers/streams and all kinds of outdoor activities.
