What do you guys think are the best places for this? Taking into consideration affordable property taxes, affordable land, long or prosperous growing seasons, ability to hunt and fish often close by and "effectively", "community" feel/neighbors actually act like neighbors , decent state for homeschooling, blah blah blah....Anyone brave enough to try answering this? Oh and add liberal to the mix......thats the catch for me, I've grown up in an extremely conservative state nearly my whole life and I don't think I'd want to move to go through this all over again.
I'm looking for a similar place, but conservative isn't an issue. I'm a Ron Paul supporter and very respectful of most religious beliefs (or lack thereof). I want to live somewhere with low crime, good economy, fertile land (or irrigated land), low taxes, friendly people, not gloomy/cloudy/rainy like Portland, Oregon! I love the desert, but it'd be nice to have a garden...and I love HEAT...humidity doesn't bother me
I'd say mid-range elevation areas in the southeast and mid-Atlantic would be good. Think northern GA, upcountry SC, western NC, eastern TN, western VA and parts of WV. Now as for liberal within those areas, you'll have to seek that out. There are certainly pockets of liberalism in areas around Asheville, Boone, Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, etc...
Otherwise I think the VT, NH, ME recommendation is a good one, though you'll have a considerable shorter growing season there than in all but the highest elevations in the south.
I was going to say Alaska until you said the community part...there you can be part of a community but rarely see them because people can be few and far between...
Some parts of rural oregon is home to a strange breed of what I can only describe as redneck hippies. Most places where people want to be away from govt. interference are conservative, however.
