The president of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. If the next person down in the chain of command refused to follow orders, that would essentially be a mutiny against the US government. This has happened in a number of countries, in which the civilian government has no power to resist a takeover by the military.

The only remaining question is whether the President would resign or if not, would have enough support within the military to repress such an uprising, or would have the force or the support throw the republic into a civil war, with rebels against patriots in a shooting war.

The Constitution has all kinds of provisions to keep the country together, but none of them amount to anything if the people who actually have the power decide to abuse the constitutional process and take things into their own hands. The Constitution, like money, is only paper that people arbitrarily agree to respect.

It happened here in 1860. Lee resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army, along with 60% of Virginia's US Army Officers. Somehow though in this weird country they are all considered heroes by people in one particular region of the country.

Because when that many people want to break away they should be able too. It was not 5 hill billys sitting around talking about succeeding. That is why it was refered to as the war of northern aggression.

It would be like if all of Montana wanted nothing to do with the USA, they should be allowed to secede or if a grouping of states wanted independence. Why does the fed govt have the right to come in and start shooting?
