when you think of US cities with large and known Jewish communities, which come to mind? which cities (and not necessarily only the top 2 or 3) do you think of as having that strong and thriving Jewish component.
I'm definitely not thinking about statistics here, more about perception….thinking about cities that have that reputation of deep rooted, strong Jewish culture and life, places you associate with that Jewish presence.
I'm thinking along the lines that when you think heavily/strongly identified Irish cities, New York, Boston, and Chicago pop up to mind. Or when you think of heavily/strongly identified Italian cities, you think of places like New York, Boston, Philadelphia.
Where I grew up in South Florida (Miami-Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood) has a very well-established and large presence in proportion to the population. In fact it only trails much larger NYC and LA in overall number with over 500K Jewish residents.
According to this list of most Jewish cities in the country from Daily Beast, it's ranked 7th, ahead of LA and Chicago. The suburb of Beachwood is the second most Jewish city in the US at over 90% Jewish.
Edsg25- good memory! I figured everyone assumes Chicago has a large Jewish population. St. Louis is no slouch either- my dad grew up in University City, an inner-ring suburb that was like the Skokie of St. Louis. Even today, it has a very large Orthodox community.
