My impression of anyone is first, they are human, they do the things I do daily for the most part, and they have a personality that may or may not clash with mine. No better, no worse than anyone else.
Other places with old money would be Mobile, Savannah, & Columbia.
Most of NC is "new money" esp. around Charlotte, but some of the Winston-Salem area has old money. There's also a lot of old money in Kentucky.
Okay now that we've gotten the definitions out of the way, what are the impressions. I just want honesty.
I think most people don't know very much about old money because it is often concealed or has limited impact on daily life.
New York has far more old money families than anywhere else in the U.S. Yet, the most visible rich people in that city are Wall Street billionaires, entertainment celebrities and other newly rich.
It's probably the same everywhere, although old money people might have more local and regional influence in the south. I don't know.
The old money in Chattanooga is pretty well known because they fund foundations - Old money lives up on the ridges (especially lookout mountain) and look down on the city.
They seem to have decided it is good for business to be Progressive and put $$ in that direction. It is different from the grass-roots progressive you will see in Asheville.
]I dont agree with that at all, virginia is probably the state most obsessed with lineage and background I have ever s[/b]een. my mother was raised in loudoun county and they have all these first families of virginia (ffv) functions and equestrian events in those horse country areas.
northern virginia around loudoun county is still very southern and equestrian with alot of nice older estates in the horse and hound country region where my mother was from. there are rockefellers and that kind of wealth there too but alot of it is based on the family background in virginia,my definition of aristocracy is something like a landed gentry, a tie to an ancestral home and land
charlottesville has alot of money and old families as well in that area too
we have alot of old aristocratic families on the eastern shore and maryland as well, there is alot of connections between the colonial and leading families in VA. and MD.

Columbia has old money but not like the historic coastal cities or Buckhead in Atlanta.
