That must be a thing in many cities. My ex-wife moved to Pueblo, CO, for about 6 months. She was always asked which school she graduated from. She'd answer "University of Denver". The other party would almost always reply "no, I mean which high school?" This seems to occur in places that have little growth with the majority of the population being native born residents.

You'd expect this in really small towns but this happening in major cities is strange.

I experienced this in New Orleans more than other places for some reason. Down there, at least my perception, was to see if you were a native New Orleanian or from somewhere else. There is very much an old family structure that is pervasive down there.

Ugh this is rampant in St. Louis and as a transplant I see it on a weekly basis.

I would say in places like Savannah, New Orleans, and Charleston, that there is going to be a certain judging if your "pedigree" has prestige. Many families there have been in the area for generations.

I don't get that high school thing here in Indy, but it's damn sure not a friendly place to live.

I made the most real friends in Redondo Beach, California. I was younger and single then though. I'm married and a bit older now that I live in St Pete, Florida, so it is tough to compare because of different stages of life.

One of the considerations that I think has to be made is the various identities one holds, i.e., are you white-European, Asian, Black/African-American; do you have kids; are you of a particular religious group; are you in a same-sex relationship or a heterosexual one or single, etc. A place that is friendly to one demographic may not be friendly to all, and it can be a real shock to move to a "friendly" place and find one doesn't have the "identity passport" that would allow entrance into social circles there.
