As much as I love the upper midwest, I absolutely HATE large forests. Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Chequamegon-Nicolet, Superior National, Ottawa, and Hiawatha are the biggest offenders.
Don't get me wrong, I love this area as they have some really amazing beauty especially along Lake Superior, but the drive in those forests to get to LS are so depressing in my opinion. I much prefer open, rolling plains and even cornfields for some odd reason. The drives to Pictured Rocks in MI, Apostle Islands in WI, and the north shore in the Duluth, MN area were uninspiring and soul-crushing to me because of all the tree cover for miles along the long stretch of road to get to those places. Even during the fall driving through the Chequamegon-Nicolet forest to the Apostle Islands, the tree colors did not really make my drive any better.
I don't know if they wow anybody but I'm not a big fan of the plains. The most unattractive place I think I've been is the area around Wichita Falls, Texas and generally north of Dallas. It's way too flat and ugly in my opinion. The vegetation has this drab, brownish, burnt-out look.
I like southwest Texas because the terrain is pretty dramatic but you can keep north Texas.
Honestly I find something to like about them all. The mountains of central Idaho are my favorite place though. I also think the great plains states get overlooked for natural beauty.

I think everything in nature has its beauty. I think it fortunate that I can find it anywhere.
That said, I do have my personal preferences. I can't see myself ever leaving the Appalachians again, however, I can appreciate the landscape in some way no matter where I travel.
