It's a deragatory term for people from IL. I know it's used frequently in WI, MO, and other midwestern states that don't appreciate the transplants.
I have never heard this, I really doubt it's common. No one I know that goes to UI cares where someone is from, they're just enjoying college and meeting people. I really question who your sources are.
It's not necessarily within the universities themselves, but rather within the cities and towns.
I think it's mostly a WI and MO thing, but I have heard it a few times in other states. My source is that I lived in the region for 15 years.
I'm certainly not saying that it's an Iowan problem; I'm just commenting that there is truth to the statement that some places in the midwest aren't super transplant-friendly. (Again, not necessarily all of Iowa).
Well the point I'm getting at is the fact that you heard this odd phrase in a few other states is no logical reason to point the OP from the university I recommended. That's all. However, you are free to state your opinion, so more power to you.
However, Iowa as a state does have a very native population (plus a handful of Chicagoans - who may or may not be liked, who knows? ). My point is that if geographical diversity is something he's looking for, he really may be better off at other schools that have more of it. Perhaps in cities or states with more transplants. Ohio would be a good bet, as well as the southern states.
Sorry if it seemed like I was bashing on your school. I was just looking at it from the perspective of what would be the most comfortable fit, based on his comment.
Nope, you're very right, there are in fact places that are much much much more diverse than Iowa. But I draw the sword when people say we aren't welcoming as a whole.
