I find the shopping is quite good generally in the South, as a visitor from the Pac NW. I've only been to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta, Baton Rouge, New Orleans & Florida cities. In my opinion for mainstream malls, Houston, TX Galleria & Mall of Georgia outside Atlanta. For shopping mix, amenities around the mall area & sheer mall design, etc. I notice lots of malls down there have outside extensions called Lifestyle Centers. This concept is very weather-related, thus I laugh when I go to the mall we have in Lynwood, WA which is decent but has its outdoor section but umbrellas are readily available to shoppers!
Also, I'm not necessarily biased since I'm from Seattle & Nordtrom is a Seattle company, but we notice any mall that has Nordstrom is comparatively very good. However for whatever reason the most impressive mall to me is Flatiron Crossing in Denver. It has a great design. I've lived in LA & am not at all impressed by the malls there, perhaps only Newport Island in Orange County. In the Seattle area, Alderwood Mall (the one I'm referring to with the outdoor section) & Bellevue Square stand out.
I know it's not the south, but they are planning on building a new hybrid mall in Vegas. It's supposed to be really cool. Largest mall in the west, I believe. Less tourist-oriented too, which will be nice. It's going to be more of a hot spot locals.
(Probably irrelevant to what you're looking for, but I'm excited. I had to share. Plus, you probably come to Vegas on occasion, right?)

Ha ha. No, haven't been to Vegas in years. But hope to make it there soon. THanks!
I'm surprised you like the Mall of Georgia over Lenox or Phipps.
I like Mall of Georgia more than the Buckhead ones maybe because I like the more sprawling suburban style malls. If I were to buy more designer stuff definitely the Buckhead malls are better. It's interesting that Atlanta is such a mall city that many highend brands are in malls such as Lenox or Phipps, yet in other big cities such as LA their more successful locations are "street style"
I know they are not in the South but.....the best mall period is Fashion Island in Newport Beach. I just walk around with my jaw dropped. But I haven't hit The Grove in LA yet, which I hear is Glorious!
The Grove is a popular spot for celebrities. It doesn't have as many stores as Newport, but it has a great Farmers Market. It does have a pleasant way about it. The Grove was a favorite place for me, when I lived in the San Fernando Valley. However its more like an outdoor shopping district, not the "mall" in the sense of being enclosed, etc, etc. LA County has crappy "true" malls. The Glendale Galleria is so badly designed, and Del Amo is ghetto- but those are not the exclusive malls though- Orange County is better that way. LA County itself has alot of street shopping, due to weather I guess too.

That may be changing though with the Streets of Buckhead, which will bring upscale stores to the streets.
