The North has NYC, Niagara Falls, the Liberty Bell, etc among many others.
What are some "don't miss" sites in the South?

Mammoth Cave, KY, Florida Everglades and Okefenokee in GA, Great Smoky Mountains, TN and NC, The Outer Banks, NC, The Blue Ridge Mountains, VA, Assateague Island Ponies, MD and VA. Biltmore, Graceland, and Mount Vernon. That's a start.

-The NC Zoo in Asheboro (South of Greensboro), which is the nation's largest walk through (natural habitat instead of cages) zoo in the world:

Not far from the NC Zoo is "Pottery Country" in and around Seagrove, which has quite an eclectic mix of various artisans who create beautiful and unique pottery pieces:

The iconic Andy Griffith show was based on the fictional town of "Mayberry" which is really in Mt. Airy (about 45 minutes northwest of Winston Salem). There are quite a few attractions based on the show here:

Visit Mayberry

And for a quirkier attraction, the "World's Largest Chest of Drawers" in High Point:

Edit: This may not be one that I would recommend dedicating a long trip just to see (there's not a museum that's dedicated to it or much "touristy" about it), but it is kind of randomly unique.

Outside of NC, who could forget Disney World?

Last edited by Jowel; 02-11-2016 at 06:23 PM.. Reason: Commentary on world's largest chest of drawer and grammatical correction/different word choices

Thank you!!
Can't wait to get down there and check out these sights! We've climbed Cape Hatteras light house (waited a long time to be able to make the trip and do that!) and been to Kitty Hawk. That was definitely something to be standing right there =)
Also the waterfront in Wilmington is beautiful! Every time we drive to Myrtle Beach, Wilmington is our stop.
We've stayed in New Bern and visited the birthplace of Pepsi too.

The revolutionary battle places such as kings mountain, guildford courthouse (which bled Cornwallis dry) and cowpens just on the sc border.

Could see the star forts in sc for example 96.

Any state parks they all have something special

Elizabeth city and pirate fame

Judaculla rock for petroglyphs Mississippi Indian mounds if you are into archaeology

Fishing rafting kayaking hiking etc

Depends on how long you have and what you like to do
