When you enter an interstate, it always has the name of the closest major city it goes through. When you get on I-80 in Youngstown going East, the sign says New York City. This is over 6 hours, and almost 400 miles away, but 80 goes through the Appalachian mountains, and doesn't go through any other major cities. Have you seen any other freeway signs name a city from that far or further? I imagine in the interior West there are some.

There is (or at least was) a sign on the western side of Kansas City on the I-70 that said Denver 600 (or so) miles. And that's 600 miles of nothing!

Oh... and there's one on the I-40 somewhere in New Mexico that says Los Angeles, with the mileage over 1000 miles!

And to make things worse, I-80 doesn't even technically go to New York City. It ends in Teaneck, New Jersey, where it merges with I-95, which quickly heads over the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan.

The farthest I've ever seen personally is just south of Jacksonville, FL. There's a sign on I-95 that has Miami 300 and some odd miles away (Daytona Beach is listed first). But after Daytona Beach, there are still populated areas to go through before you get to Miami (Titusville, Melbourne, West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale).

There used to be a sign for Miami, Florida near Richmond Virginia on I-95. They took off the Miami part about 10 or so years ago, I believe.

this used to be in Wilmington NC a few years ago. However people kept stealing it, so it's not there anymore.

There are exit signs from I-75 NW of Atlanta to I-285 South with arrows labeled 'Tampa.' It's roughly 450 miles.

Around El Paso is an interstate sign that says something like "Beaumont 830 miles."
