In western Maryland, Wisp resort has skiing and golf and is right next to Deep Creek Lake.

What appeals to me about the west is that it's more sunny, a little less cold, and drivable to more places we would visit.
Thanks for the ideas guys! Lots to think about!
Salt Lake City does indeed have a big lake that it just so happens to be named after... But it's very salty and I heard that can interfere with the recreation. I have heard a lot of negatives about the Great Salt Lake but maybe someone with more experience can comment. It may be what you are looking for though.

I think you might be surprised about Salt Lake City, it has the same climate as where you live now... Salt Lake City has the same climate as Chicago. The differences being hotter in the summer, roughly same temperatures in the winter, less rain but more snowy days in SLC, and probably sunnier and less humid. This is strictly due to the giant lake, as it's anomaly considering its still in a desert and doesn't reflect a desert climate at all (this is probably only in the valley SLC sits in) though this might be a good thing. Desert climates are definitely not for everyone.

Though yes, giant lake and probably the closest to skiing options out of all major cities, it's worth the consideration for you guys. It might be best for you. Utah also has a couple other lakes nearby, like Utah Lake, that might be less salty and easier for recreation.
