Yes; the founders of Cleveland, Charlotte, and Columbia all got together back in the early 1800's and said "you know what; in about 150 years; they are going to make an interstate highway that runs North to South and will pass through all three of these cities; we should make them all start with the same letter!"

That's the reason...

All major cities (sort of, if you use the much more industrial Sparks instead of Reno) west of the Rockies on I-80 start with S.
